The game in a nutshell

7 Wonders Duel is the two-player version of 7 Wonders, by Antoine Bauza and Bruno Cathala. Over three Ages you take cards from a shared layout to build an ancient city, race your opponent to build Wonders, and can win early through military might or science. It plays in about half an hour and suits couples, siblings and friends who want a deep strategy game for two; for bigger groups, get 7 Wonders instead.

Is 7 Wonders Duel right for you?

Great if

  • Couples, siblings and friends who often play as a pair and want a real strategy game
  • 7 Wonders fans who find the big game awkward with only two people
  • Players who like a tug of war: every card you take can help you or block your opponent
  • A gift for a board-gamer: reviewers often call it one of the best two-player games

Skip it if

  • You want a game for three or more people: it plays exactly two
  • You want something light and chatty: turns need thought and the symbols take a game or two to learn
  • You dislike direct competition: one player can win early by military or science

How 7 Wonders Duel plays

Set-up: each player takes 7 coins. Then you share out the Wonders: four are turned up, the first player takes one, the second takes two and the first takes the last; four more are turned up and you repeat, so each of you has four. Place the conflict pawn in the middle of the board, the four military tokens on their spaces and five random Progress tokens face up. Lay out the Age I cards in the pattern shown in the rules, with some rows face up and some face down. For a first game, the rules suggest fixed Wonder sets instead of choosing.

  • Time to teach: about 15 minutes.
  • Reading and language: Cards, Wonders and tokens use symbols and numbers, so there is almost nothing to read during play. The English rulebook and helpsheet explain the symbols, and you will check the helpsheet often in your first games. There is no Hindi edition.

    Pick

Take any card from the layout that no other card is covering.

Build it by paying its cost, sell it for coins, or tuck it under one of your Wonders to build that Wonder.

  3. 3

The full explanation: how a game of 7 Wonders Duel goes

On your turn, take any card that no other card is covering and do one of three things: build it by paying its cost, sell it for 2 coins plus 1 for each yellow card you own, or tuck it face down under one of your Wonders to build that Wonder. Brown and grey cards give you resources every turn; anything you lack you buy from the bank, and it costs more when your opponent produces that resource. Then turn up any face-down card you have uncovered.

There are three ways to win. Red cards push the conflict pawn towards your opponent's capital, and reaching it wins at once. Green cards carry science symbols: a matching pair earns you a Progress token, and six different symbols win at once. If neither happens, after Age III the player with the most victory points wins, counting blue cards, Wonders, guilds, Progress tokens, military position and leftover coins (1 point per 3 coins). A tie goes to the player with more points from blue cards.

Only seven of the eight Wonders can be built: when the seventh goes up, the last one is put away, so building early can shut your opponent out. Tip: before you take a card, look at what it uncovers, because opening a strong card for your opponent can cost you the game.

How it differs from 7 Wonders: there is no passing hands of cards round the table. Both players pick from the same open layout, there are no neighbours, and military and science can end the game early. Duel is made only for two; 7 Wonders itself takes 3 to 7 players.

There is no Indian edition of 7 Wonders Duel and we found no Indian distributor, so every copy sold here is imported. The game has a single English edition from Repos Production, part of Asmodee, sold since 2015, so any authorised English copy is the same game. The listing we link names Repos Production and Asmodee, and our Amazon.in link goes to that English box.

How to make sure you get a genuine copyA little care before you click.
  • The box should carry the Repos Production and Asmodee names and credit Antoine Bauza and Bruno Cathala, with art by Miguel Coimbra
  • The barcode on the English box should read 5425016923818
  • It is a nearly square box, about 21 x 21 x 6 cm, weighing around 0.5 kg
  • Count the contents: 23 Age I, 23 Age II and 20 Age III cards, 7 Guilds, 12 Wonders, 10 Progress tokens, 4 military tokens, 31 coins, a board, a pawn, a score pad and a helpsheet
  • An unusually cheap copy, blurry printing, flimsy coins or a missing score pad or helpsheet are warning signs

What reviewers and players say

Reviewers consistently rank 7 Wonders Duel among the best two-player strategy games. It keeps the look and card types of 7 Wonders but replaces passing hands with a shared card layout, and the military and science wins turn each game into a tug of war on three fronts. Games tend to be close, last about half an hour and play out differently thanks to the Wonder draft and the hidden cards. The common complaints are small cards that wear with heavy play, trading rules that take a moment to explain, and the frustration of uncovering a strong card for your opponent; one reviewer felt the base game wanted an expansion after many plays.

What people love

  • Three ways to win, so you must watch military, science and points at once
  • Close games, often decided by a few points
  • Deep decisions in about 30 minutes
  • The Wonder draft and changing layouts keep games varied

Common complaints

  • Small cards on thin card that wear with heavy use
  • Trading costs take a moment to explain
  • Uncovering a strong face-down card for your opponent can feel unfair

Questions people ask about 7 Wonders Duel

Is 7 Wonders Duel available in India?

Yes, as an imported game. There is no Indian or Hindi edition, and every copy here is Repos Production's English box. Our Buy on Amazon.in button goes to a listing that names Repos Production and Asmodee.

Can more than two people play 7 Wonders Duel?

No. 7 Wonders Duel is made for exactly two players. For three to seven players, get 7 Wonders, which is a separate game in the same world.

What is the difference between 7 Wonders and 7 Wonders Duel?

In 7 Wonders, 3 to 7 players pass hands of cards and score against their neighbours. In Duel, two players take cards from one shared layout, race to build Wonders, and can win early by military or science. Duel is the better buy if you mostly play as a pair.

Is there a new edition of 7 Wonders Duel?

Not as of October 2026. The 2020 'new edition' was for the bigger 7 Wonders; Duel is still the original 2015 game, with the Pantheon and Agora expansions sold separately. The box on our link is that English edition.

What age is 7 Wonders Duel for?

The box says 10 and up. There is almost no reading, but children need to plan ahead, learn the symbols and manage coins, so younger players may need help in their first few games.
