The game in a nutshell
Scrabble is the classic crossword-style word game for 2 to 4 players aged 10 and up. You draw letter tiles, build words on a shared board that link to the words already there, and score more by covering the bonus squares. It suits couples and families with older children who enjoy English words and a slow, thoughtful game. Genuine Scrabble in India is Mattel's. Most of the cheap 'Scrabble' sets sold online come from other brands.
Is Scrabble right for you?
Great if
- Two people who want a quiet, competitive game after dinner
- Families with children of 10 and up who read a lot, since spelling and new words come up naturally
- Getting grandparents, parents and teenagers around one board, because many older relatives already know the game
- A gift for someone who loves words or crosswords
Skip it if
- Some players are not comfortable in English and would feel left out
- You want quick, noisy fun for a big group (Codenames or Taboo suits that better)
- Your children are under 10. Mattel's Scrabble Junior is made for them

How Scrabble plays
The board is a 15 by 15 grid and the bag holds 100 letter tiles, including two blanks. Each player draws seven tiles onto a rack, keeping them hidden. Every tile shows a letter and its point value: common letters like E are worth 1 point, rare ones like Q and Z are worth 10.
- Time to teach: about 10 minutes.
- Reading and language: Everything happens in English. You need to spell real English words, so a player with a smaller English vocabulary is at a clear disadvantage. No Hindi or other Indian-language edition was found in India. Mixed groups can agree to let weaker players check a dictionary before they play a word.

Your turn, step by step
- 1Place
Use tiles from your rack of seven to make a word across or down. The first word must cover the centre star; after that, every word must join the words already on the board.
- 2Score
Add up the letter values, doubling or tripling for any coloured squares you just covered. Using all seven tiles in one turn earns 50 extra points.
- 3Draw
Refill your rack to seven from the bag. If your letters are poor, you can use your turn to swap some instead, or pass.
- 4Win
The game ends when the bag is empty and someone uses their last tile, or when everyone passes twice in a row. Take off the value of tiles left on your rack; the highest score wins.
The full explanation: how a game of Scrabble goes
The first word must cross the star in the centre of the board. After that, every new word has to join the words already on the board, crossword style, reading left to right or top to bottom. After your turn you draw back up to seven tiles.
Your score for a word is the total of its letter values, boosted by any coloured squares you covered: double or triple letter, double or triple word. A bonus square only counts on the turn it is first covered. Using all seven of your tiles in one turn earns an extra 50 points. Blanks can stand for any letter but score nothing.
If your letters are poor, you can give up your turn to swap some of them for new ones from the bag. Agree on a dictionary before you start. If someone challenges a word and it is not in the dictionary, the player takes the tiles back and scores nothing that turn.
The game ends when the bag is empty and one player has used all their tiles, or when nobody can move. Everyone subtracts the value of the tiles left on their rack, the player who went out adds those values to their own score, and the highest total wins.

This list is from an Indian listing for Mattel Scrabble Original, the set sold in India, and Mattel's English rules, which describe 100 tiles including two blanks. Mattel's 2024 two-way edition sold in the UK (item HWD43) adds a flip side for the cooperative 'Scrabble Together' and goal cards, but we did not find it in India. Scrabble Junior (sold separately) has a two-sided board with pictures for younger children.

Mattel sells Scrabble in India through its Indian company. Indian listings give China as the country of origin and a barcode starting with 50, the GS1 prefix used for the UK, so the boxes sold in India appear to be made abroad and imported by Mattel. Whichever listing you use, check that Mattel is named as the brand.
How to make sure you get a genuine copyA little care before you click.
- Look for Mattel or Mattel Games on the box and in the listing's brand field, along with the Scrabble logo. Many listings put 'Scrabble' at the start of the title while the brand field shows an unrelated name.
- Be wary of a 'Scrabble' that costs a fraction of the usual price. Much cheaper unbranded sets are not Mattel products, whatever the title says.
- Watch for misspellings such as 'Scraable' or 'Scrable' and for titles stuffed with 'Original', 'Classic' and 'Educational' without any brand name.
- Several different sellers use the same product photos. If the identical picture appears on many listings from different brands, treat it as a warning sign.
- Check the contents: a genuine set has 100 letter tiles (two of them blank), four racks, a tile bag and a 15 by 15 board, and every tile shows its point value.

What reviewers and players say
Scrabble has lasted more than 75 years because it is simple to start and has real depth: you balance making long words against grabbing the double and triple squares. Writers praise how it builds vocabulary and spelling, and how it works for two players as well as four. The downsides are that a stronger English speaker usually wins, turns can be slow while someone hunts for a word, and serious play leans on memorising odd two-letter words. In India the bigger problem is finding a genuine Mattel set, as look-alikes fill online searches.
What people love
- Easy to learn: make a word, add up the score
- Builds vocabulary and spelling without feeling like homework
- Works well as a quiet game for two
- Real tactics in the bonus squares, swapping tiles and blocking
Common complaints
- Players with a bigger English vocabulary have a big advantage
- Turns can be slow while someone searches for a word
- Arguments over which words count unless you agree on a dictionary first

Questions people ask about Scrabble
Are cheap 'Scrabble' sets sold online genuine?
Most are not. Outside the US and Canada, Scrabble is made by Mattel. Many cheaper listings use 'Scrabble' in the title but show a different brand, so check that the brand field says Mattel before you buy.
What is the difference between Mattel and Hasbro Scrabble?
It is the same game. Hasbro holds the Scrabble rights in the US and Canada, and Mattel holds them in the rest of the world, including India. A Hasbro set in India is an import; the Mattel set is the one Mattel's Indian company sells here.
Which dictionary should we use for Scrabble?
Outside North America, the official tournament word list is Collins Scrabble Words. For family games, any good English dictionary works, as long as everyone agrees on it before the first word goes down.
Is Scrabble suitable for children?
Mattel's Scrabble Original is rated for ages 10 and up. For younger children, Mattel makes Scrabble Junior (ages 6 and up), whose picture side guides them to letters.
